MAGA is Conspiracy
#MAGAisLies
By telling and embracing lies, those in power can create their own truths
The Draw of Conspiracy Theories is in its simplicity
Conspiracy theories provide many benefits for believers. They provide an overly simplistic view of complex problems by assigning blame and an easy to understand motive for problems of the world. For example, there are several factors that led to the 2008 financial crisis, but this complexity doesn't give any comfort to those that were impacted by the losses. Instead, the causes of the crisis were simplified to greed by certain actors or groups of people, a simple to understand narrative that people can use to drive actions and potentially fuel hatred.
Conspiracies allow those in power to change the truth
When people are susceptible to conspiracy theories, it allows for those in power to reinvent the truth for their own aims. Hurricane Helene is one such example, where a natural disaster causes immense pain for those in the path of the storm. There are a whole host of complications that arise during a storm of this magnitude and the people on the ground are suffering. This provided a hotbed of conspiracies, one of the most notable ones being that the Democrats created the hurricane to impact Republican areas. Suddenly a natural disaster that should drive all people together becomes a divisive political issue.
Never in history has countries been able to influence the people of another country
Thanks to the Internet and social media, we're now able to connect with people anywhere on the planet. Unfortunately, this has allowed foreign governments to directly influence people in other countries to advance their own interests.
Fighting Back
In an online conversation, all too often people are trying to correct each and every lie. While its important to correct the record, its equally important to question the credibility of the people that are lying. We need to hold MAGA accountable for all of these lies. We need to ask why they believe all of them. By flipping this script back on them, we can make MAGA look like the crazy ones defending positions that together aren't based in reality.
There are 34 conspiracies theories that are supported by MAGA in this dataset.
4 theories have originated from Russian propaganda.
JD Vance falsely claims a protected immigrant was a gang member
March, 2025
JD Vance falsely claimed that El Salvador native Abrego Garcia was a convicted gang member. He was sent to an El Salvador prison without due process. The basis of JD Vance's arguments are in a 2019 court proceeding.
Reality
The 2019 court proceeding confirmed Abrego Garcia's status as being under temporary protection within the United States.
Furthermore, his connection to a gang was based on a single informant. The informant stated that this connection was based on Garcia wearing a Chicago Bulls hat and a hoodie.
There was also a claim that Mr. Garcia was detained in connection to a murder investigation, but that turned out to be a mistake. The gang that Mr. Garcia was supposedly a part of operates in a state that he has never lived in.

Elon claims 200 year olds getting Social Security
February, 2025
Elon Musk claims that dead people up to 300 years old were receiving Social Security.
Reality
Part of the confusion comes from Social Security’s software system based on the COBOL programming language, which has a lack of date type. This means that some entries with missing or incomplete birthdates will default to a reference point of more than 150 years ago. The news organization WIRED first reported on the use of COBOL programming language at the Social Security Administration.
Only criminals are being deported as part of the mass deportion plan
January, 2025
The Trump administration claims that only the criminals are being deported as part of their deportation efforts.
Reality
To be identified as a criminal in the United States, you must be found guilty of a crime, in which case the undocumented status would get the person deported anyway. ICE is raiding workplaces, churches, schools and home for undocumented migrants, the vast majority of which do not have any criminal records and have not been charged with a crime.
Countries receiving these migrants are reporting that pregnant women and children are being deported. Matching this report with a prior one indicating that these migrants are not receiving water, allowed to go to the bathroom, and do not have any air conditioning as they are being hauled by cargo planes could indicate a crime against humanity.
$50 million in condoms to Gaza
January, 2025
Press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that Trump had prevented a “preposterous waste of taxpayer money.” Trump’s team, she said, used the president’s pause on foreign aid to thwart a plan in which “there was about to be $50 million taxpayer dollars that went out the door to fund condoms in Gaza.”
-CNN
Reality
There was no evidence provided by the press secretary or the state department that this actually happened. Audits conducted on USAID over the past 3 years to Gaza suggest that no condoms were delivered to any middle eastern country in 2021, 2022, or 2023. $50 million to Gaza represents a huge amount of aid to the people of Gaza and it unrealistic that this claim is true.

January, 2025
Trump, in a speech to the Congressional Institute event at his Trump Doral resort on Monday, Trump claimed without evidence that the 2024 election was going to be rigged by Democrats, but then they gave up. Trump offers a fake "buyout" to try and scam federal workers into resigning
January, 2025
The Trump administration put out an email stating that he would pay federal workers if they resign by next Friday.
Reality
This "buyout" attempt would require a Congressional act to provide funding, which hasn't happened. Trump is attempting to get federal workers to resign with no intention of paying the severance package.
The emails being sent out regarding the buyout are also marked as being from an external account and being vague on any details.

January, 2025

Marjorie Taylor Greene suggests cloud seeding could have stopped the California wildfires
January, 2025
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene suggests that the government wasn't using cloud seeding technology to make it rain on the California wildfires.
“Why don’t they use geoengineering like cloud seeding to bring rain down on the wildfires in California?” Greene wrote on X Sunday. “They know how to do it.”
Reality
Cloud seeding technology has not progressed enough to make it rain on command. In addition, the technology focuses on triggering rain from existing moisture in the air. The wildfires have been sparked by very dry conditions compounded by the high speed Santa Ana winds.
Danish intelligence claims Russia created idea for Trump's interest in Greenland
January, 2025
"PET, the Danish intelligence agency, claims that in 2019, Russian operatives forged a letter from Greenland’s then-Foreign Minister Ane Lone Bagger to provoke US President-elect Donald Trump into expressing interest in purchasing Greenland when he served his first presidency term, BILD has reported."
"The fabricated letter from former Foreign Minister Ane Lone Bagger was allegedly addressed to US Senator Tom Cotton. In it, Greenland’s official reportedly thanked for “financial assistance” and indicated plans to expedite a referendum on Greenland’s independence from Denmark.
Following the letter, Senator Cotton proposed acquiring Greenland, which may have inspired Trump to seriously consider the idea. However, the report says Trump’s public comments about purchasing Greenland were ridiculed by Danish officials, leading him to cancel a planned visit to Denmark in anger." - Euromaiden reports.
Andrey Gurulyov, a Russian Parliament (Duma) member and former military commande suggests that Russia and the US split Greenland between the two countries. "Russian politician Andrey Gurulyov said on state TV: "Trump is staking his claim to Greenland. Why don't we look at Greenland? We need Greenland; no joke. At the very least, we could make a deal with Trump and split Greenland into a couple of pieces. It is clear that Denmark will never be there again.
"Svalbard, which is very close to our Northern Fleet, is extremely important to us today. There will be some very nice bases there. There will be some very nice bases there, affixing the whole of the Arctic component." - Newsweek reports.

Trump supporter makes false claim on X about cloud seeding
January, 2025
An account baselessly linked the disaster to cloud seeding — a technique that shocks clouds to artificially stimulate rainfall. “Money was spent on cloud seeding to ‘increase rainfall’ even though California has no infrastructure to support it. 80% of rainfall flows back into the ocean,” it said. “It’s on purpose. They want the state reliant on government for water.”
Reality
There is no evidence of cloud seeding being performed.
Trump claims California wildfires
January, 2025
"Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way."
Reality
This is false. State officials along with Republican sources in California's legislature confirmed to KCRA 3 on Wednesday there was never a "water restoration declaration" placed in front of Newsom. Since Newsom has been in office, there has not been legislation that would do what Trump is describing

Hurricane Helene was created by Democrats
October, 2024
Conspiracy theorists believe that the democrats used weather modification techniques, largely focused around cloud seeding technology, to generate a hurricane to hit Republican majority areas prior to the 2024 election.
Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene : "Yes they can control the weather. It's ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can't be done."
Alex Jones: "Bottom line the federal government could have killed the storm in the Gulf of Mexico."

Trump has admitted on several occasions that he lost the election.
The conservative think tank Heritage Foundation tracks voter fraud cases. There are 1,567 cases of voter fraud dating back to 1982. Many of these are single cases of voter fraud over hundreds of millions of votes cast over several elections.
Confidence in elections remains low despite the fact that actual convictions of voter fraud remain almost non-existent.

Trump claims the popular vote win was stolen in 2016
November, 2016
Trump falsely claims ‘millions of people who voted illegally’ cost him popular vote during the 2020 presidential election against Hillary Clinton
Reality
Texas Tribune - In 2016, just weeks after pulling off his stunning presidential victory, Trump made an unprecedented claim: Millions of people had voted illegally in the election. And, he said, that’s why he’d lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton — by what would ultimately be about 2.9 million votes.
He didn’t offer up any evidence. But weeks later, Phillips appeared on CNN claiming he had the data analysis to show that more than 3 million voted illegally in the 2016 election. But when asked to show proof, Phillips said he needed time to verify the data.
“(We) believe that it will probably take another few months,” Phillips said. Trump tweeted shortly after the interview: “Gregg Phillips and crew say at least 3,000,000 votes were illegal. We must do better!”
True the Vote quickly used the opportunity to push a $1 million fundraising campaign to audit its data.
“Our audit team will include world-class technologists, researchers, data miners, statisticians, scholars, analysts, and subject matter experts. This isn’t B team stuff,” Engelbrecht wrote in a fundraising email. “The integrity of our election is too important.”
But Engelbrecht and Phillips never completed the audit or released the evidence behind their claims. In a video posted on YouTube in June 2017, Engelbrecht said they dropped the effort because donor promises didn’t materialize.
Trump claims ISIS terrorists are hiding within Syrian refugees
October, 2015
Real-estate tycoon Donald Trump has recently been sounding the alarm over a potential Islamic State-led "military coup" in the US.
"It could be one of the greatest coups of all time," Trump said in a Fox News "Hannity" interview that aired Friday evening. "They could be ISIS. It could be a plot. I mean, I don't want to think in terms of conspiracy, but it could be a plot."
Reality
One major argument immigration advocates have cited against making any changes to current plans is the lengthy process for vetting refugees. It typically lasts 18 to 24 months, and experts say it may actually be among the most difficult ways for terrorists to attempt to enter into the US legally.
"It is extremely unlikely that someone who is a terrorist will be sent through the refugee resettlement program," Greg Chen, director of advocacy at the American Immigration Lawyers Association, told Business Insider on Monday.
"It takes a great deal of time, and it wouldn't make sense for someone who is a terrorist for someone to go through that process. There are going to be easier ways for a terrorist to try to infiltrate, rather than going through the refugee resettlement program."

Ukraine Leader Buys Yacht with US Funding
This conspiracy theory alleged that the Ukrainian President and family were using US aid money to buy luxury items for themselves. In particular, a YouTuber alleged to have obtained purchasing documents between the president's family and two yacht companies.
Reality
This conspiracy theory was a fabrication from the Russian government. The lie was exposed online with realizations that the purchasing documents were digitally altered. The documents in question hadn't been used since 2013. There was no reason for any redactions on the document. And the YouTube source was a single person who could not corroborate the story with anyone.
Several small and some medium right-wing YouTubers amplified this story. Congresswoman Majorie Taylor Greene also retweeted the story directly from a Russian media outlet known to be under direct control of the Russian government. Once discovered to be fake, many of the right-wing YouTubers deleted their videos on the subject.
